Sutter Cane, one of the most famous Austrian DJs and producers, will be playing at the club Maximus in Kotor at the first party of the „Empty-Headed“ series. This Driving Forces Records founder and a promoter of popular BOINK! parties will make people dance with his hypnotic techno sounds. The Clubber crew had the opportunity to talk to him about how he became interested in techno music, his collaborations, some future plans and other things. You can read the whole interview below. Hello! First of all, thank you for your time! How are you? What’s new?
Hey 🙂 thanks for your request! Busy times but I’m fine!
Your remix of Torsten Kanzler’s track Midiproblem just got out recently and it’s amazing. How did it come to this collaboration?
Well Torsten and me know since many years, but the request came from Dolby D, owner of Dolma records during the signing progress of his upcoming Phase Control EP on Driving Forces Recordings he did in collaboration with A.Paul.
You have a reputation of a really good remixer and you worked with many amazing DJs. Is there a collaboration that was more special than all the others for you?
Most of the remix requests I received are an honour for me as they show me that other artists respect my work and that I’m somehow on the right way with my personal vision of Techno. Maybe the most special ones was the first remixes I did as I was new to the market but already got the possibility to work with some great producers.
You showed interest in techno music at a really young age. How did you come in touch with it and what made you want to become a DJ and a producer?
Indeed I was really young when getting infected by the virus called Techno 😛 but the whole thing was a slow growing process as I was already listening to synthy pop years before during long car drives with my dad. I was always fascinated by those special soundscapes those songs featured and to be honest I was never a big fan of guitar music.
But Techno I discovered together with my stepfather, probably one of the first ravers in Austria and even Eurodance was a step before listening to Techno. Techno was anyway a wide range of different styles, but back in the days it was all called Techno, nobody really cared if it was Hardcore, House, Acid, Trance as long as it was that new kind of fast dance music it was perfect for me.
What can you tell us about your label Driving Forces? (Its work, the idea behind it, its mission, upcoming releases, etc.)
It all started with a live p.a I did with an old friend of mine, we already confirmed some shows but still had no name for the project, so in the beginning we played as Sutter Cane vs Ivan Bucko live, but suddenly we came up with the name Driving Forces. For some reasons we did not continue working together but I loved the name and the meaning behind Driving Forces so a few years later I had the the idea of featuring uprising Austrian talents, equal if they are Djs, Vjs, grafic designers, producers… and started again with Driving Forces. In 2009 I finally made my dream of my own Techno label come true and well… Driving Forces Recordings seemed to be the perfect name 😛 The mission was and still is to feature Techno music – state of the art and far beyond or as we say today – Techno at its best!
Upcoming releases are always a big topic… and there are a lot of upcoming releases in the pipeline. There will be tracks and remixes by Torsten Kanzler, Flug, A.Paul & Dolby D, Luca Marchese, Temporary Permanence, Angy Kore, A-Brothers, Mike Ban, Chris Hope, Mike Wall, Spektre, Steam Shape, Blue City Dub, Balthazar & Jackrock, Frank Biazzi, Irregular Synth, Highestpoint, Hollen, Pascal Nuzzo, Dirtybasscore, Toby Rost, Gene Karz and myself to name just a few to come up during the next few months 😉
Do you have any projects and releases planned for the future? What can you tell us about them?
I have an upcoming new EP on Nachtstrom Schallplatten with remixes by Wire, Lag and NX1 coming up in a few days. I will feature another new remix by myself for A.Paul & Dolby D’s upcoming release on DFR. I’ve got requests to release Eps on Torsten Kanzler’s TK Records, on Sven Wittekind’s Sick Weird Rough and Spektre’s Respekt. Let’s see how I will find time to finish something suitable. Krenzlin and me are working on a collaboration EP, hope to finish this one soon! I should also finish my follow up of The Alchemist EP on Driving Forces and theoretically I want to finish my album since meanwhile 2 years but time management is a pain in the ass… but that’s my biggest target for 2016.
It’s been a long time since you showed up on the techno map of the world, what are some of the best and worst experiences you had since you started playing?
That’s truly a hard question as every night is special in another way. I had a lot of great experiences and only a very few bad ones. But for me the most horrible thing is when promoters simply do not care about the artists they invite, sometimes you simply feel that they just care about their money and it’s totally not about Techno, if that happens it’s a bad experience for me. But thanks god this does not happen too often.
Would you say that it’s easier for DJs and producers to get a record deal now than it was before? Why is that?
On the one hand it’s easier as it’s way more easy to get in touch with the right people or labels nowadays. Everybody is connected via facebook, twitter, and so on. So with a bit of luck you can easily sign your music today. On the other hand side there are soooo sooo many new producers out there and it became really simple to produce some good sounding tracks these days, but what I miss is the creativity of today’s producers, to break limits, to try new things and to go their own way… somehow everybody tries to copy each other or a specific style… that has nothing to do with the original idea behind Techno!
You’ll be playing in Kotor, Montenegro, next month.. Is this your first time performing in front of Montenegrin audience? How do you fell about that? Do you have any expectations?
Yes! Definitely my first time and I’m really looking forward to this one! Expectations… well, there is some great Techno music coming out of that area so I hope for an open minded crowd and some real Techno heads.
Lastly, do you have a message to your fans and our readers? What can they expect from your performance?
Don’t believe the hype and keep things real!
Expect Techno, cause Techno is what you will get 😉
