Swiss DJ and producer Manuel Fischer is known and recognized for his talent. Manuel is going to play in Belgrade at NYE, which was one of the reasons for asking him few questions and get the opportunity to find out something more about him. Enjoy!
Part of our audience got to know you when you were a guest of Christallization radio show and Kristijan Molnar. How would you introduce yourself?
I’ll introduce me with a few facts.. My name is Manuel Fischer, I’m born and raised in 1991 in Zürich/Switzerland with a few years in between in Berlin. Next to producing music for myself, bands and movies, I’m studying Design in the 3rd semester here in Zurich. I love music, snowboarding, my girlfriend and my friends, and I like a good piece of meat to eat.
What can you tell us about your style? How would you describe the music you play?
There is no specific style… In every Genre, there is music I love. It’s just not always the time to play it out.. But mostly i’m playing House Music and disco, with a few breaky inputs. It’s hard to describe.. at the end it has to be music which I like and I enjoy and which makes me dance. I’m kinda over the whole serious techno thing, at the end of a night, everyone should’ve had fun!
You are a classically trained musician. What made you get interested in electronic music and what were your first influences?
Thru Snowboarding Movies I first had contact with bands like Cut Copy, or Ed Bangers “Uffie”, which was a total new and nice thing for me. I already knew the more oldschool techno stuff, but this gave me the ultimate interest as I found it refreshing. Don’t get me wrong, Underground Resistance and the whole movement is also really important and for sure good, but at the beginning of my youth, the more “indie rock” based electronic music got me like a bang.
What can you tell us about Ozelot Ltd. and it’s first release?
Ozelot is a playground for me and my friends. It should be more open, it should be a base for the music we like. That means, that there will not be any barriers.. We’re working on a “Beat Tape” by Abdel Hady, which will be MPC beats only, there will be more trippy- tooly stuff from Prioleau, and from myself there will be more musical stuff coming.. The first EP, which will come mid January after some pressplant delays, is really trippy and clubby on the a side, and more krautish on the B side.. at the end of the day, genres are different. But if you put them into one package, there is no border.. To make it short: It should reflect our musical preference, and it has to be combined with a lot of freedom in the graphics + a lot of fun for sure!
You released music for White, Tief and Drumpoet Community among others, are you working or planning to work on new music?
I just signed another one on Drumpoet, and for Ozelot there is a lot in the pipeline… I finished a few remixes recently and i’m still working on a few. Some collaborations are in the making aswell which i’m really looking forward to! I’m also working on a long player which will be combined with a design project, that’s exciting for me surely, but yeah, a lot of new stuff is coming in 2017. I’m really happy in zurich, the studio we all share is great and i’m surrounded by my best friends which makes a great exchange possible.
For NYE you are playing at BeGe Nova 17, Belgrade, so what are your expectations?
I played once in Belgrade, My brate Kristijan (Molnar) invited me for “20/44” back in June where I played with him and Jennifer Cardini. This party was great, and for me it was an amazing experience as I’ve never been in Serbia before. I have a lot of Serbian friends, I grew up with a lot of people who are originally from Beograd, and I always heard good stories about the city. I surely wasn’t disappointed. I’m so happy to be there on new years eve, and I’m excited to meet amazing people! Last time will be in my mind for ever, such a nice city with a nice vibe, met so many good people and I ate a lot of meat! I’m expecting a good vibe with new and old friends, and hopefully i’ll catch my flight back to Zurich in the afternoon,where I will be playing a set at “Kauz”.
What kind of set are you preparing for us?
I don’t prepare anything. I guess we will see there, what music will fit. But I definitely bring some Discojams! And some Swiss house music! And some exclusives!
What are you doing then you are not making and playing music? What are your interests?
As I mentioned before, i’m a Design Student here in Zürich at Zürich School of Arts. Most of the time i’m just a stupid guy when i’m together with my crew here, and i’m feeling really good here in Zurich. It’s a great place to live! I love my crew, they mean everything to me. I love cooking and i’m also always happy to visit my parents house to chill with my little brother Till and my three cats Emily, Luigi and Mimi. I draw a lot, and we’re always on a mission to get a new project started. It keeps us busy and happy!
As 2016 is coming to an end, I wanted to ask you what will you remember it by and what are your plans for 2017?
I was traveling a bit, I met a lot of new friends and I learned a lot too. I had my first gigs in Asia, which was a big step for me, and I kinda fell in love with the cities I visited as I’ve never been in that part of the world before.. So glad to be back there in January/February 2017! My plans aren’t really different to how it is now: I want to release good music, learn a lot at school, be nice and fair to people, maybe get a bit healthier and maybe maybe i’ll get myself a new motorbike if plans are going well. 😉
