Hailing from Argentina and based in Berlin, Jonas Kopp is one of the most prominent names on the techno scene. We got a chance to speak with this Tresor resident before his first gig in Kotor, Montenegro about his music and new project. Jonas also revealed his expectations from the upcoming gig. Enjoy!
What are your expectations from the gig in Kotor and what should audience expect from you?
Big expectations from my side as it’s my first time in Kotor and I really don’t know what is going on over there, so I am happy to go and discover a new place, the audience should expect a very hypnotic and energetic experience, 2 hours of pure techno.
What made you fall in love with techno music, when did you decided it’s what you wanna do in life?
I did fall in love with techno music when I was 12 years old, when my father gave me a Kraftwerk CD as a birthday present , that was the beginning and then I reconfirmed this love when I was going to the first raves in Buenos Aires.
Do you see yourself more as a producer or a DJ?
I have the perfect balance of both, I can be very eclectic and complete in both roles, playing and producing from ambient, house and techno with the same background and knowledge .
How did you became a resident in „Tresor“, how much does it means to you and what makes this legendary club so special?
It was a natural connection, I believe in synchrony and destiny… so it was a long personal journey till reach this position as a resident of the club and as a representative face of the brand. I feel very honored and also feel a huge compromise as artist, I have to give the best from my side in every dj set I do at the club and in every production for the label, and that is happening right now as I am finishing the second album for Tresor, which is really special.
Berlin is known as a very artistic, multicultural city. How much does that affect and influence your music?
I was living in Berlin during 3 years and it was a big experience in the personal and artistic way, I have learned a lot of new things and I have deeply explored the clubbing scene, record stores and everything about the culture and history, I have reached another level as an artist and person after this experience .
Your 2014. album „Beyond The Hypnosis“ was very well received, even called the album of the year. Were you surprised by this good reception? How are preparations for the next album going?
Yes, it was a very special album because I could express the right message at the right time, it was a very special moment in my life, full of inner changes and awareness, also I could express all my influences from the label and history of Tresor with a modern and personal touch .
Yes a new album is 80% done, I am working in the final process at the moment, it will be very special and more complex than the first one, also expressing a very personal moment .
You recently released „Seek“ EP with Pfirter, how are you satisfied with the reception, how did it came to this collaboration?
We are really happy with this EP on Polegroup, we could put all our ideas together in one record, we are working together for more than 10 years, that is the secret key of our current good connection and much more material is coming for the 2017.
Few years ago you posted an open letter about Argetina’s club scene on your Facebook page, what made you do it? What do you think about scene today?
I always honest with my feelings and my audience in Argentina, I use my social networks to communicate what I do as artist but also I like to communicate what is going on inside my mind and heart, at that moment the scene was a mess, there was not a representative club for underground music and the scene was full of people trying to make parties just for money .
Luckily my post has a positive impact and some things has changed since that post, these days the scene is much more eclectic with few more options and alternatives for techno and house artists and with the best audience of the world, every time I go there is an excellent experience for me.
Can you tell us how your day in studio looks like. What inspires you when you are working on a new track?
My studio is pretty simple, I still working with software and some analogue stuff, mixer and some effects, that is all and enough for me.
I have a lot of ideas in my mind and also I like to sit down with any idea and get surprised jamming up .
You are know for your three turntable DJ’s sets. How do you do it, what’s your modus operandi when DJing? What do you think about new technologies in DJ-ing and electronic music, some say that anyone today can be a DJ and producer?
When I play a techno set its way easy for me to use 3 channels as I mostly play tools, I like to build atmospheres and tension using tools and equalizing properly , the mixer is the extension of my mind.
I am ok with technologies and I think that is important to have a balance and not abuse of these technologies , because you can be very snob and boring , loosing your essence as a dj.
Anyone can be a DJ and producer but very few ones can be a very special DJ and producer don’t think so?
Many see you as the most exciting figure that emerged from underground scene in recent years. What would you advise young DJ’s and producers, how can one get above the sea of producers?
My advise is be yourself all the time, no matter what happens in your career or what you become after some years, keep your essence and belief for ever.
What was the craziest party you’ve been playing at?
At the Atonal after show at Tresor last year, I have played more than 6 hours till noon, I was really exhausted and people won’t to leave the room, Tresor is always a crazy adventure .
What are your plans for the next year?
Basically being touring with the new album on Tresor and also release the album of my ambient project „Telluric Lines“, also I am going to release a double vinyl under my house moniker „UNTIDY“ plus more techno EP´s on Semantica, Construct Re-Form and on my label Traut .
