Juliana Yamasaki moved from Brazil to Germany so she could follow her dreams and become a DJ and a producer. She’s been DJing since 2004, and since then she performed at some of the best festivals and clubs in the world. Except her Juliana Yamasaki project, she is also behind a name Julyukie, and when she’s performing under that name she’s playing only hard techno. We talked to her about her first time in Montenegro, and she told us how she fell in love with electronic music, what can we expect from her in the future and how she manages to perform, produce, study and raise a daughter at the same time. We hope you’ll enjoy!
Hi, first of all, thank you for your time! How are you?
All fine, thanks.
How did you got interested in electronic music? And what was it that made you want to become a DJ and a producer?
When I started to go to electronic music parties I directly felt in love with the music and it didn’t take long until I decide to start to play, it was kind of love from the first beat :). But with productions I started later.
Back then, techno scene in Brazil was still growing, so how hard was it for you to make a name for yourself there? And who was your biggest support when you decided to go down this path?
I think everything began when I started to promote my own parties, then I got automatically in touch with the other djs whose I was inviting to play and started making new contacts. My biggest support was a big friend of mine who is also a dj Alex TB. He was the one that from the beginning was always helping and motivating me. Thanks Alex! hehe
Earlier this year you released an EP for De-Konstrukt label. What can you tell us about those songs? What inspired them?
I wanted something with a powerful beat , driven and melodic and in the EP you have a combination of that. There is not a specifically inspiration for the tracks. When I produce I sit in the studio and experiment the sounds. For sure there is a kind of inspiration of something that maybe I’ve heard before in one track or set somewhere but nothing specific.
And what about your future plans and releases? When can we expect something new from your studio?
Right now I’m working in a remix for Steve Shaden and I have some unfinished tracks going on. For sure you can expect new tracks and also collaborations very soon :).
Correct me if I’m wrong, but at the same time you’re doing shows all over Europe, making new music, studying and raising a daughter, that’s amazing! How do you find time for yourself? And what is it that you want to do when you just want to relax?
It’s true. In the moment I’m doing a lot! But in the end all of those things are also time for myself because being with my daughter, working with music and learning new things in the university are just fun and give me a great feeling. When I want to relax I like to run or watch /read something I think it’s interesting.
What is one of the best things that happened to you since you started a career in electronic music, and why?
I think the best thing that happened was to move to Germany, because after that I could grow as an artist and as a person. I had the opportunity to play in many different countries, see other cultures, listen to new music and go to the some of the best festivals in the world.
Which advice would you give to young DJs who are trying to make it in the techno industry?
I would say to try to be always authentic and play what you really like and not because it’s on the hype. To do music because you love it and not because you want to get famous. And maybe try to make your own music, make parties, being in touch with other djs, working together. The rest is consequence.
You’ll be playing in Bar, Montenegro, later this month and this is your first time there.. Do you have any expectations from the people there?
I’m so happy about my first time in Montenegro and I expect that the people like my music and that we all can have a great night together.
And lastly, what would you say to the people who are coming to that party? What can they expect?
Hey everyone, I’m very happy to see you all in the party and for sure we’ll dance and sweat a lot!! 🙂
