Pan-Pot are certainly a synonym for great techno music. They are one of the most influential names on the scene. We were honored to speak with Tassilo Ippenberger and Thomas Benedix about second album that they are currently working on and new EP they have just released. Enjoy!
Hello Tassilo and Thomas, I am really glad I had the chance to do an interview with you. You are preparing the second studio album “The other”, what’s new in your sound and can you pick some of your favorites?
Tassilo: Hi! It’s a pleasure to sit here for this interview. This album is a more mature project. We used a more diverse approach than our previous works. Our first EP is out now so you can already check it!
Thomas: It crosses several genres and includes influences from techno, down-tempo and breaks. Every track is quite unique and stands by itself so I find it hard to pick a favorite one.
The second album comes via your new label Second State. What are your plans for the label in the coming few months besides the album?
Tassilo: We have releases scheduled up until the end of the year; a solid EP from young and talented artist Michael Klein, which will be out at the end of July, another EP from Clint Stewart to close the summer and another dance-floor bomb from Stephan Hinz.
Thomas: We also have two showcases lined up. We will present the label at Sunwaves Festival for the first time and will host another label event in October with the Hyte crew in Amsterdam for the second time during ADE week.
Before releasing “The other”, your new EP “The other one” was released on 17th of July. Why did you pick “Pina” and “808 Nirvana” to be on the EP?
Tassilo: Both tracks perfectly show the club part of the album but both are quite different to each other. ‘808 Nirvana’ has the old school 808 sound in a more up-to-date costume and so far it’s worked out very well in clubs and on festivals.
Thomas: ‘Pina’ reminds us both of back in the days when we played more minimal.
We’ve heard premiere of both tracks on Soundcloud, “Pina” has a pretty mean bass line, and “808 Nirvana” represent serious techno. Is this kind of sound that prevails on the album?
Tassilo: A “yes” wouldn’t be accurate. The album has a very diverse sound.
Thomas: Every track tells it’s own story. Clearly the track list sets the overall tone of album. We hope you will enjoy the musical journey once it is out 🙂
Part of the The Clubber crew was at the Berlin festival for the first time and we really enjoyed it, how was your experience during the sunset at Badeschiff beach that day?
Tassilo: smiley and sweaty 🙂
Thomas: Berlin friends, happy people and good vibes as with every time we play in Berlin.
Summer is on, it’s a festival time, what are you preparing for the Sonus festival in Croatia?
Tassilo: Most importantly, always fresh music 🙂
Thomas: You can be sure we will play some of the tracks from the album. Very curious to test some of our tracks on the dance floor.
Last year you played at Papaya club, this year your party will be at Kalypso. Do you enjoy more in smaller or bigger parties?
Tassilo: We don’t really have general preference. Of course, a big dance floor sets a completely different vibe than a smaller setting. Small parties create a more intimate crowd, while during big parties there is more dynamisms and overwhelming feeling. From a DJ point of view both settings are great!
Thomas: It also depends on our mood of the day; we could feel more comfortable playing in one type of party rather than the other.
What’s your favorite festival where you have the best vibe and feedback from the crowd?
Tassilo: Last year at Sonus festival actually. People kept us nicely busy throwing swimming suites and other type of beachwear on stage to have them signed. It was very funny and crazy 🙂
Thomas: Time Warp! Fun on the dance floor and on stage!
