Martinez Swanstein, born and raised in Sweden, at an early age discovered house & techno music. Since he already played various instruments it was a natural progression to begin producing music himself. His sound begun in the deeper & jazzier fields of electronic music. In the middle of 2003 Martinez begun to feel a stronger passion for the techier and more experimental sounds of house music. Martinez launched his own label, Out of Orbit Recordings, which has been a platform not only for his own music, but for his friends too: Trentemoller, Nima Gorji, Robert Babicz, Jussi Pekka & Robert Leiner.
His first two releases on Re:connected exploded and were highly supported by major international DJ’s such as: Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Sven Väth, Loco Dice and Miss Kittin. We are proud to announce that he will perform this Friday at club Tunnel in Novi Sad. In this occasion, we talked with him! Check out!
Hey Martin! First of all, thank you for your time!
You are one of the best known artists coming from Copenhagen, Denmark. The scene there is not very known for the rest of the Europe, except you and Nima Gorji in techno and house genre. How did you become interested in electronic music?
A friend passed me a mixtape with House & Techno around 1994 and I was really blown away by the music on there. I loved the imaginery state of electronic music, that it wasn’t just the same detectible instruments and song structure. From there I started buying records, got interested in DJ’ing and later started messing around with drum machines, samplers and synth’s.
You become very famous around the world with your productions on some of the biggest tech-house labels, such as Cadenza and Oslo to name a few, and your tracks are played by some of the best international Tech-house and Techno DJ’s. Today you mostly release more minimal music, what made you change your style? …and how do you see it?
I wouldn’t categorise my music these days as ‘’minimal‘’ more than anything else. I take inspiration from all genres that I like. Mixing it all together and making music based on feeling more then the idea of a genre. Sure some tunes are more minimal, but others are more inspired by house or breakbeats or Detroit techno or something else. I personally don’t see the reason to categorise any music. What I make now, may have gotten more deeper and more mature with the years, wich is just a natural progression for any artist, I think. I don’t decide consciously to ‘’change’’ my style, if I change something it happens very naturally and is based on my current mood.
Do you think that is important today to be part of the major label? Or music is just enough?
For me, the music is always more then enough and should be the main focus. If it’s good, people will find it. Maybe a big labels helps to get attention faster, but it’s not a necessity ot the main goal.
Since you play all around the world, can you tell us what has changed in a world techno scene from your beginnings? From your point of view.
It’s constantly changing, I guess for good and bad. I don’t have too much to say about that in general.
We know that you make a lot of music, is there some new release or remix in the future that you will like to point us to?
Yeah sure, next there is a 12’’ on Hello!Reapet? coming up and one on Ministerium Records, which is a sub label from Assemble Music from Portugal. I also made a mix for Shoxy coming up soon..
Your label Concealed Sounds is very known around the world for quality sound. Can you tell us what we can expect from the label in near future?
I just released my latest 2×12’’ called ‘’Super Phiction’’ on Concealed, and I’m at the moment planning the next releases for 2017. Unfortunately I can’t say too much right now.
This is your second time to play in Serbia, this time in an amazing club Tunnel in Novi Sad.
What do you expect from the party? And what can the audience expect?
I’m very happy to come back to Serbia and I’ve heard very good things about the club. I just expect a fun night and loads of electronic music, and so should the audience too! 🙂
